Finland is a good market for medical device companies from a market access perspective.

The key challenge from a reimbursement perspective is the decentralization of the healthcare system and differences in payment mechanisms. Finland is divided into 20 hospital districts that have autonomy in the selection of payment model. Global budget, DRG system, and tariff for the procedure payment models are used by different hospital districts. Also, different districts can use different versions of DRG systems and for different purposes (reimbursement, benchmarking, budget allocation).

Similar to Norway and Sweden, the lack of established reimbursement is not the key challenge in market access in Finland. The key is the adoption by end users of the technology. The health technology assessment environment is developing as well, after a period of being put on hold.

We offer a seminar on critical elements of the hospital reimbursement system for medical devices in Finland that can guide your decision-making about the introduction of novel technologies into this market.
