Belgium is one of the rare countries in Europe that has a fee-for-service payment mechanism for hospital care. In addition to the INAMI fees for drugs, as well as physician and other services, hospitals also receive a budget for ward stay/other hospital activities.

The main goal of the market access activities for the majority of the procedures is the creation of the procedure code in the INAMI Nomenclature and inclusion into the List of reimbursable implantable and invasive devices. The role of the DRG is minor; APR-DRG is used only for a small number of low-variable procedures.

In addition, one Coverage with Evidence Development scheme exists, the goal of which is to provide temporary reimbursement in a limited number of centres to generate additional evidence to inform further decision-making about permanent reimbursement for implantable and invasive medical devices in Belgium.

It is essential for medical device and IVD companies to understand the pathways to the ultimate goal of reimbursement in Belgium. We offer a seminar on critical elements of the hospital reimbursement system for medical devices that can guide your decision-making in this complex country.
